I am excited to announce the launch of The Romare Bearden Catalogue Raisonné Project. This represents the culmination of work that I have been undertaking since 2021 for the Wildenstein Plattner Institute.

The inaugural release features over 200 of the artist’s unique works created between 1964 and 1969. This significant launch represents a major step forward in the study of one of the 20th century’s most influential African American artists.

Working in partnership with the Romare Bearden Foundation, WPI’s team of researchers led by myself have made incredible strides in identifying elements of the artist’s production: approximately 50 works presented in this first installment were previously unknown within the Foundation’s records.

This digital publication also features seamless integration of the Romare Bearden Papers, inviting users to explore early exhibitions, photographs of Bearden in his studio, interviews, scholarship, and a wider range of his creative production that includes writing and music. The entry for the work pictured here for example, “Prevalence of Ritual: Baptism”, includes an installation view of the exhibition, “Romare Bearden: The Prevalence of the Ritual” at the Museum of Modern Art in the spring of 1971.

Future installments are planned with continued collaboration with the Romare Bearden Foundation, our technology partner Navigating.art and vital support from the Hasso Plattner Foundation.

Please check out this incredible resource and stay tuned for more.
